| Ferdinand Marcos rose from humble beginnings, through the Philippine Congress, to become president of the Philippines in 1965.  He was re-elected in 1969.  In 1972, battling civil strife from Muslim and communist insergents, he suspended the constitution, declared martial law, and became a dictator. Marcos allowed elections in 1986. He claimed victory over Corazon Aquino but was forced out of office by a popular uprising. He was eventually forced to leave the county and he and his wife fled to Hawaii. . |
